There are so many types of lace because they vary in thickness, or denier, and uses. For example, opera lace has a very high denier. Each wig type has its strengths and weaknesses, but HD lace is especially unique because its strengths are so prominent.

What is HD Lace?

HD lace stands for high-definition lace. It’s a type of royal lace, which is an incredibly high-quality lace. Until recently, the best lace to get was Swiss lace, but HD lace is the newest iteration of the famous Swiss lace. So, what makes it so special?

What’s so great about HD lace?

A massive achievement of HD lace is how easy it is to match with different skin tones. Transparent lace is easy to match with lighter skin tones but for dark skinned people to wear use it, it will have to be bleached at the roots. But with HD lace, it doesn’t matter what your skin tone is. As soon as it touches your skin, it becomes nearly invisible.  This is due to the incredibly low denier of HD lace and the silky, high-quality of the lace itself.

Another prominent benefit to HD lace is how gentle it is on the skin. Many people struggle with the scratchy or itchy quality of other types of lace, but HD lace feels like silk on your skin. In addition to it being gentle, it’s breathable as well. You don’t have to worry about the lace tearing up your hair as you style your wig. I highly recommend HD lace to those of you with sensitive skin or fragile hair.

The last reason that HD lace looks so natural. The quality of the lace is so sheer that you don’t have to worry about blending it to look natural. It’s so sheer that you can wear a slicked back bun or show off your baby hairs with a curly girl look.

What’s the downside to HD lace?

Like any great product there are some downsides. These downsides aren’t listed to detour you from using HD lace, but you should be aware of some of the risks involved with purchasing HD lace.

Something as wonderful as HD lace doesn’t come without a few downsides. True HD lace front wigs, as in HD lace that isn’t blended with anything, is very expensive. After doing a little shopping for some HD lace, the lowest price that I could find was $180. But on average, an HD lace front wig will cost between $400 to $3,000USD. When you consider the price and the shelf-life of an HD lace front wig, it’s quite telling that you’re dealing with something special.

Speaking of shelf-life, it’s important to keep in mind that HD lace front wigs don’t last long. The longest that an HD lace front wig can last is 8 to 12 months. The normal shelf life of a wig worn everyday is 6 to 24 months depending on the wig. Hearing that a HD wig’s shelf life is so long would be good until you consider that the quality of the wig decreases the more you wear it. Since HD lace is so thin, it frays very quickly and tears easier than stockings.

With these points in mind, it’s safe to say that HD lace wigs are not good for daily use.  Celebrities like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Beyonce, and Kelly Rowling wear their HD lace wigs exclusively for special events. HD lace wigs are perfect for photoshoots, music videos, and other situations where you need to look good for the camera. But if you’re looking for something that will last a long time and you can wear it daily, an HD lace isn’t for you. Your wig will last longer if you maintain it with care and wear it infrequently.
